Questions, answered

Does this tell me when I should claim Social Security?

No. This tool only shows the age past which a later claiming strategy pays more in cumulative total, based on the exact benefit numbers you enter. It never recommends a claiming age — that decision depends on your health, other income, spousal benefits, and taxes, which a licensed advisor can help you weigh.

Where do I get my benefit estimates at 62, FRA, and 70?

From your Social Security statement at ssa.gov/myaccount. This tool does not estimate your benefit for you — using your own SSA figures keeps the crossover math accurate to your actual work record.

What if two of my benefit amounts are the same?

If a later claiming age doesn't actually pay a higher monthly benefit than an earlier one, there's no crossover — the earlier claiming age pays more in total at every age, since it has a head start with no higher monthly amount to make up the gap.

Does this account for spousal or survivor benefits?

No — this compares only the individual benefit amounts you enter. Spousal and survivor benefit rules can change the math significantly; a licensed advisor can factor those in for a couple's actual situation.

Does this account for taxes on Social Security benefits?

No. Up to 85% of Social Security benefits can be taxable depending on your other income. This tool compares gross benefit amounts only — not tax-adjusted figures.
