Questions, answered

When do RMDs actually begin?

Age 73 for those born 1951–1959; age 75 for those born 1960 or later (SECURE 2.0). Your first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the year after you reach your required beginning age, but every year after that has its own December 31 deadline.

What if my spouse is more than 10 years younger than me?

This calculator uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table, which assumes your spouse is not your sole beneficiary more than 10 years younger than you. If that applies, a different table (Joint Life and Last Survivor) applies and generally produces a lower RMD — that calculation isn't done here.

What happens if I miss an RMD?

Under SECURE 2.0, the excise tax penalty on a missed RMD is 25% of the shortfall, reduced to 10% if you correct it within two years by taking the distribution and filing IRS Form 5329.

Does this account for Roth IRAs?

No — Roth IRAs are generally not subject to RMDs during the original owner's lifetime. This calculator is intended for traditional pre-tax retirement accounts.

Is this exact?

It's an estimate based on the published IRS Uniform Lifetime Table and the balance you enter. Your custodian calculates your official RMD each year — use this as a planning estimate, not your final number.
