Questions, answered

What is the federal poverty level (FPL) used for?

The FPL is a set of income thresholds published annually by HHS. Marketplace health insurance uses your income as a percentage of the FPL as one factor in determining premium tax credit (subsidy) eligibility and amount — along with household size and other factors on your actual application.

Does this calculator tell me exactly what subsidy I'll get?

No. It shows your percentage of the 2026 federal poverty guideline for education only — it is not an eligibility or subsidy determination. HealthCare.gov (or your state marketplace) calculates your actual subsidy based on your complete application.

Whose income counts toward household income?

Generally, the Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) of everyone in your tax household who is required to file a return, including your own. A licensed advisor can help you total this correctly before you apply.

Why does household size matter?

The federal poverty guideline dollar amount rises with each additional person in the household — a larger household has a higher FPL threshold, which changes the percentage the same income represents.
