Questions, answered
Why does it matter if my employer pays the LTD premium?
Employer-paid group long-term disability premiums typically make the benefit taxable income to you if a claim happens. Benefits from a policy you pay for yourself with after-tax dollars are typically not taxable. This calculator applies a flat illustrative tax assumption when you mark coverage as employer-paid — not your actual tax bracket, and not tax advice.
What counts as essential monthly expenses?
Housing, food, utilities, insurance premiums, and minimum debt payments — the costs that would still need to be paid even if your income stopped. It's a starting point you can adjust to your own household.
Does group LTD cover 100% of my income?
Rarely. Most group long-term disability plans replace 50–70% of income, often with a monthly benefit cap. Check your plan's summary for your exact percentage and any cap.
What if I'm self-employed with no group coverage?
Enter 0% for the group LTD benefit and use the individual DI field for any policy you already own. Self-employed individuals often need to rely entirely on individual disability coverage since there's no employer group plan to fall back on.
