Questions, answered

Where do the base cost figures come from?

The starting figures are the National Funeral Directors Association's published median cost of a funeral with viewing and burial, and the median cost of a funeral with cremation — the latest data published as of this writing (2023). You can adjust for your local market and add your own extras budget on top.

What is a graded death benefit?

Many guaranteed-issue final expense policies — which accept applicants without health questions — pay a graded benefit for the first 2–3 years of the policy. If death during that period is from illness or natural causes, beneficiaries typically receive a return of the premiums paid plus interest, rather than the full face amount. Accidental death is usually paid in full from day one, even during the graded period.

Does "guaranteed issue" mean I'm guaranteed the full benefit right away?

No — guaranteed issue means guaranteed acceptance (no health questions), not a guaranteed full benefit from day one. That's exactly what a graded benefit period addresses. Never assume acceptance and full-benefit timing are the same thing; read the policy's graded-benefit terms carefully or ask your agent to explain them.

What is simplified-issue final expense insurance?

Simplified-issue policies ask a short list of health questions (no medical exam) and, if approved, more often pay the full death benefit from day one rather than a graded amount. Approval and pricing still depend on your answers and the carrier's underwriting guidelines.

Can I use this estimate to decide exactly how much coverage to buy?

Use it as a starting point only. Actual funeral costs vary significantly by provider, casket or urn choice, and services selected — a local funeral home or licensed advisor can help you build a more precise number for your family.
